Salerno, a beautiful city, situated at the centre of the Gulf namesake and washed by a sea of incomparable beauty, both for the beaches, both for the charming landscape. The city has always been at the same place where now finds its center oldest. Salerno enters the documented history (197 BC) as a Roman colony whose lands are cultivated by the Punic War veterans who belong to a small "castrum" (castle) fortified called "Castrum Salerni" or better known as Castle Arechi. Castle Arechi is of medieval origin, situated at a height of about 300 metres above sea level and dominates the entire city of Salerno. The castle in medieval times was also a sort of triangular defensive scheme, which coincided with the slopes of the hill Bonadies on which arose. ![]() Amalfi is a small city of white houses burdened to a steep slope in the valley carved by the river Chiarito (or Canneto). Waterfront overlooking the Piazza Flavio Gioia, with the monument dedicated to the alleged inventor of the compass, from here starts the seafront, close to open the glass ogival arches of ancient Arsenali of the Republic, for shelters vessels Amalfi and places dedicated to the activities Merchant, now used for art exhibitions and expositions. On the right of the Arsenale opens a narrow passage, the port of Marina, a medieval access to the city side of the long sea. On the back, triangular square with the Baroque fountain of St. Andrew, dominates a staircase above the high facade of the Cathedral rebuilt in '800. ![]() Probably founded by a Roman colony in the sixth century, the first news Ravello on certain dates back to the ninth century when all the centres on the coast returned in the State amalfitano. The village still retains its medieval appearance: contorte streets, houses, churches by the beautiful mosaics testify yet decided influence on Arab and Byzantine Romanesque south. Among its treasures of art are of particular importance the Cathedral, founded in the twelfth century, Villa Rufolo, whose origins date back to the eleventh century, with its indescribable flowered terraces and Villa Cimbrone famous for its exciting Belvedere where you can enjoy the most beautiful landscape in the world.
Scala, the oldest town along the coast, was founded in the 4th century AD by shipwrecked Romans trying to make their way to Constantinople. The history of the town is closely associated with that of the Marine Republic of Amalfi; it is the birthplace of Brother Gerardo Sasso, who founded the "Ospedalieri di Malta" which later became the Order of the Knights of Malta. Scala is known for its many churches and noble houses; you can still see the remains of the antique walls that were built to defend the town. Due to its historical and cultural features and the preservation of its architectural heritage, Scala was recently included amongst the "Villaggi d'Europa" (European Villages).
The Duomo of Scala, modified in Baroque times has maintained the medieval crypt, the Angevine sepulchre of Marinella Rufolo, and an episcopal mitre and a Crucifix from the 13th century. Other important monuments are the church of San Pietro, in Angevine-Gothic style, the church of San Giovanni Battista, with a Moresque bell tower and the romanesque church of Annunziata.
![]() Last country in the Amalfi coast facing the Gulf of Salerno, we find Vietri sul Mare, located behind the valley Bonea, characteristic town that seems to be confused with the rocky landscape from which is composed, groups of houses cling to bastions of limestone to the precipice sea Vietri make a country unique. Vietri sul Mare is famous mainly for the art of manufacture of ceramic, art that dates back to ancient times and that was perfected over time up to produce garments that are genuine masterpieces appreciated worldwide, while several fabbrichette items every corner of the town of colors enrich a landscape already wonderful. ![]() Paestum, the ancient city of Campania situated in the Tyrrhenian coast south of Salerno, was one of the main centers of Magna Graecia. The city, which is known the extension was only partially reported the light through archaeological excavations. To the south lies the archeological the great urban sanctuary Era, with two magnificent temples dedicated to the goddess, the so-called "Basilica" of about 540. BC, and named "Neptune", 460 BC The two temples, along with that of Athena, is an exceptionally complex, even for the excellent state of preservation of buildings, which are among the highest examples of Doric in the West. 'Archaeological area of the city was included by UNESCO in the list of sites of global interest, to safeguard as a World Heritage Site.
![]() Surrounded by mountains and close to the sea, Cava de 'Tirreni is situated in a broad and green valley. The history of the city is interwoven with that of Benedictine Abbey founded here around the year 1000. This "green gateway to the Amalfi Coast," Cava de 'Tirreni retains many historical and artistic as the Borgo Scacciaventi, the Cathedral, the Church of St. Francis and the Basilica of Madonna dell'Olmo. Significant opportunities for hiking, as the one on Lattari Mountains. ![]() Mercato San Severino, town of ancient origins, was inhabited by the Romans and later by Byzantines and the Lombards. The place buys notoriety with the advent of the Normans, namely with Troisio, giving life to the noble and powerful family of Sanseverino, whose presence in the territory of the commune is related to the conquest of Salerno on the part of Robert Guiscard. Important place to visit is the Castle of San Severino that overlooks the entire city.
